ICD-10 delayed until October 1, 2014

The U.S. Department of Health and Human services announced this afternoon that the compliance deadline for replacing ICD-9 with ICD-10 will be postponed again. Read more

New Medicare payments will vary from 2011

Doctors will see changes in the way they are paid for serving Medicare patients starting with January 1 dates of service, although the differences should be subtle for Rhode Island. Read more

The US House and Senate have both approved a two-month extension of several current policies that affect many millions of Americans and were set to expire on January 1, had both houses of Congress failed act. Read more

November 1: Last call for e-prescribing exemptions
before Medicare penalties hit on January 1

RI physicians who prescribe for Medicare patients should by now either be well-established electronic prescribers, or they should have secured an exemption. Physicians who do not prescribe electronically for Medicare patients and do not have an exemption will see their Medicare payments reduced by 1% starting January 1. Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the AMA

The Affordable Care Act includes many major provisions that are consistent with AMA policy and hold the potential for a stronger, better performing health care system. Many provisions will not become effective until 2014 or later. This will give the AMA, state and specialty societies the opportunity to have maximum input in the regulatory process and to seek further legislative changes.

Judge finds for the State on provider taxes

In a case that has ramifications for doctors of all specialties and across the nation, a Rhode Island judge has rejected RIMS’ challenge to the constitutionality of the state’s “surcharges” (provider taxes) on certain medical imaging and ambulatory surgical services.
